Trying my hand on some necrons

I've got a box of Necron Warriors, just to break the pace a bit.. here is what I've started. I'm going to try to make a more interesting base for these guys than the ones I'm used to. There's also a warrior in the works, but he's still far from picture material :)

Starting the chaplain with the left foot

I have started painting the Jump Pack Chaplain by using the color scheme in the previous post as a reference. However, I have decided NOT to drybrush this guy at all, which brings me to a whole new way of painting this model.
By starting on the left foot I had plenty of room to experiment with the colors and highlighting without ruining the whole model by mistake.

So, what did I use:
1) Primed with white, then switched to black (this could be the first mistake that I've made on this model, but I hope it won't affect the detail)
2) Painted the armor edges first with dilluted Codex Grey
3) Thinned the armor edges and covered the whole area with slightly dilluted Chaos Black
4) Applied 2 layers of thinned Dark Angels Green (less towards the shadowed areas, more towards the lit areas)
5) Applied a thin layer of Dark Angels Green mixed with Codex Grey

For the knee:
1) I have covered it with a thin coat of Astronomicon Grey
2) Applied 3 layers of very thin Skull White, more towards the top, less towards the bottom.
3) Pained the skull with Shining Gold and gave it a wash of Badab Black.

New marine, new technique

Basically, this one has been done with a lot of drybrushing, starting with Knarloc Green, then mixing in some Dark Angels Green for dark spots and gradually adding Camo green. The pseudo-shading on the shoulders, kneepads , legs and such has been done manually with wet blending.

Looks more like a Nurgle marine than a regular one, but oh well.. it will have to do :D

Terminator closed and a 5th marine

This marks a few new forays into the .. science of mini painting, namely:
  • drybrushing
  • grass usage
  • basing with something else than regular PVA glue and sand. The rock slabs beneath the terminator were made from green stuff.
  • faster model basecoating with a large brush: the first models took some 40 minutes to basecoat with the camo green. The marine was finished in about 5 minutes.

4th marine closed & more

It now seems the problem I have with highlighting is because of bad color mixing. Because of that, I decided to close the 4th marine.
Also, I have added an extra touch of detail on the weapons and armor edges by highlighting them with a layer of mithril silver. They look much better now :)

3rd marine closed

I decided to close the 3rd marine after applying these fixes :)
  • Armor is painted much smoother
  • Right shoulderpad has been completed
  • Re-inked some of the creases to enhance detail
  • Teh skull is slightly ok-ish
